Why do so many girls quit sport during high school?
I have noticed this time and time again with my friends and other students going through high school. When we are kids, our parents influence us into sports and other activities for both social and physical benefits. However the mental benefit gained from playing sport seems to be the most forgotten about. Especially during high school when our brains are overwhelmed with information. If girls are unable to have a physical outlet for the stress that school work brings, it makes sense that within a few years, unhealthy habits begin to emerge. However, what are the reasons for why girls choose to give up playing a sport? Possibly because they think they do not have enough time to be committed to it since so much of their time is occupied with studying. Or perhaps it is a problem relating more to their perception of self and their body image?
Regardless of what your reason is, if you're thinking of giving up a sport, please don't. Not only will it keep you fit and healthy but it is great for your mental health as well. Especially if you are playing a team sport, it does wonders to your overall development. I have never met someone who doesn't regret quitting a sport that they enjoyed playing. That said, if you do not enjoy playing the sport or feel forced into playing it, then either find a different team or a new sport all together that interests you. Whether that is football, mixed martial arts or yoga. All very different sports, but all have great benefits.
If you have already given up a sport but are interested in trying something new, then look around at all the different sports that are on offer and pick one that sparks interest. Try to get a friend to try it with you if you're nervous. Just know that there are no negatives when it comes to playing a sport (only injuries - so please make sure you warm up and cool down before and after playing).
Intro
Time spent worrying about what others think of you is wasted time.
You are amazing.
Time spent agonising about how you look is wasted time.
You are beautiful.
When you are yourself, with the qualities that make you unique on full display. That, is when you are your most beautiful.
Treat others how you want to be treated.
Don't talk, act.
Don't say, show.
Don't promise, prove.
If you never try, you'll never know.
